Description
The composition is based upon the biblical narratives of Christ over-turning the tables of the merchants and money changers, and cleansing the temple (Matthew 21.12–17, Mark 11.15–19, and Luke 19.45–48). The technological process is centred on, what is termed in DJ parlance as, ‘turning the tables.’ This involves the manual manipulation of records on analogue DJ turntables, and – using a digital transfer of the Scourby recording – on virtual DJ turntables. The output from these devices was processed variously through modulators. The source narrative is, in effect, overturned, broken down, and fragmented: a sonic metaphor for the disordering and destruction wrought by Christ’s act of vandalism.

The back-beat provides a serious, steady, slow, and low-toned pulse that serves to hold in-check the sometimes frenetic, erratic, compulsive, and disturbed spirit of the vocal element.

Lyric
And he taught, saying unto them
that any man
And he taught, saying unto them
that any man should carry any vessel
through the temple
cast out
went
cast out
went
cast out
overthrew the tables
the tables of the moneychangers
destroy him
But ye
of the moneychangers
But ye
But ye have made it
But ye

and Jesus went into the temple, and
of the moneychangers
seats of them that sold
went
them that sold
went
them that sold

went into the temple, and began to
and began
overthrew the tables of the moneychangers
and began to cast out
overthrew
and began
the tables
cast out
the moneychangers

went
cast out
went
went to cast out
but ye have
but ye
but ye have
but ye
but ye
and Jesus went into the temple
the temple
to Jerusalem

but ye have
but ye have
but ye
made it
but ye
and they come to Jerusalem

Jerusalem
overthrow
to the temple

but ye have made it a den of thieves
but ye have made it a den of thieves
den of thieves

saying unto them
cast out
cast out
my house shall be called
shall be called
of all nations
cast out
my house
house of prayer
prayer
overthrew the tables of the moneychangers
overthrew the tables of the moneychangers

that any man should carry any vessel
through the temple
through the temple
through the temple

sought how they might destroy him

overthrew the tables of the moneychangers

cast out
cast out
them that sold
tables of the moneychangers
destroy him
destroy him
destroy him
destroy him
destroy him
destroy him
overthrew the tables of the moneychangers.

Biblical Text
And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves; And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple. And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves. And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.
