Depth Meshes Horridly (Dark Valley)

from I. Nothing. Lack (Psalm 23) by John Harvey

/

about

Dementia patients produce their own sounds. These include involuntary vocalisations of names, grunting, moaning, humming, whimpering, screaming, and wailing. And, again, these utterances are repeated over and over. ‘Depth Meshes Horridly’ (an anagrammatic discombobulation of the phrase ‘The lord is my shepherd') references these more abstract, impulsive, dark, yawningly apathetic, and unsettling outbursts. A profound impairment of language, coupled with noises associated with the technical deficiencies of the original recording, are also evoked, among brief moments of consoling lucidity. The backbeat loop is derived from the sound of either a Bible or a hymnbook having been dropped to the floor by one of the congregation.

lyrics

In green pastures, green pastures
In green pastures, green pastures

He maketh, he maketh, maketh, he maketh, he maketh, he maketh
Want, want, want, want, want, want, want, want, want, want

I will fear no, I will fear no, I will, I will, I, I, I, I

My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
The Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord

Maketh, maketh, maketh, maketh, maketh, maketh
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la,

Forever
